Dermal Fillers
By Tracy Desjardins
The natural aging process as well as sun damage worry and environmental factors manifest themselves in the condition of our skin. There is a reduction in our dermal collagen which causes the elastic framework of our skin to loosen and therefore we see an increase in lines and wrinkles in our skin. The soft plumpness of our youthful skin is something that we all would like to once again achieve. Dermal fillers are an extremely safe, soft-tissue augmentation that can help our skin achieve a smoother and more relaxed appearance.
What are Soft Tissue/Dermal Fillers and where are they commonly used?
Dermal fillers (soft tissue) have similar effects to Botox treatments but work in a different fashion. Botox injections work by relaxing and inhibiting the underlying muscles to lessen the expression lines. Dermal fillers are injected in small amounts into the skin, specifically the dermis, just beneath the skin's surface. This raises the skin and hides our wrinkles and unwanted folds. Dermal fillers are used to enhance our appearance by filling in facial creases, including smile lines (nasolabial folds), forehead wrinkles and vertical lip lines. These fillers are often used to enhance and beautify lips by increasing their fullness or changing uneven lip lines.
Are there any side effects?
The usual side effect of these treatments includes redness and swelling. These reactions tend to resolve within 1-2 days.
